1.In three paragraphs, describe the role of Jan Chipchase in defining the role of cellphones in the developing world for Nokia, and the benefits of analyzing and defining their use in different cultures as part of their market expansion.
Jan Chipchase work as a human-behaviour researcher for Nokia. Nokia is a telecommunications and cellular company. Part of his responsibility is “to peer into the lives of other people, accumulating as much knowledge as possible about human behaviour so that he can feed helpful bits of information back to the company.” Basically, his job is to expand the company and cellular use to developing nations outside the West.
He considered himself as a “User anthropologist” which broadly speaking means that he studies cultures across the globe. If the objective is to further development of these 3rd world countries, his responsibility is to learn the need and find the solution of how to achieve these goals. Analysing local economies allow Chipchase to view from many different perspectives to increased the income of many local entrepreneurs is an example of the benefits his job carries. He views how telecommunications can help improve transactions. The main benefit is that after analyzing cultures, he look at ways of how the Nokia brand of cellular can help improve these economies both from a local and national scale.
This sort of process is known as a human-centered design, which “ultracompetitive high-tech companies trying to figure out how to write software, design laptops or build cellphones that people find useful and unintimidating and will thus spend money on.” Part of the benefit for companies for hiring anthropologist is that is before bombarding with products to these countries, anthropologist studies these cultures and teach back to the headquarters of what they may not understand in these developing cultures. Thus, it than allow companies such as Nokia to develop a product which suit the need for these people rather than forcing them to accept it.

2. How does the idea of microfinance support two of the key themes of sustainability as outlined in the diagram posted on your class wiki '5 Key Themes for Sustainability'? Write one paragraph for each of your chosen themes.

Achieving a Sustainable economy
Is clearly the objective of Nokia and Chipchase is to achieve a sustainable economy with telecommunications. The divide from the West and developing nations is so immense. Capitalism have help expand many nations and yet also exploit many nations at the same time. It have to wonder if Capitalism reaches all part of the world, what would happen. I think that helping to create a sustainable economy allow these countries to prosper and become independent in its own development. If the facts are true about cellular phones increasing income for people and the local economies, microfinance is definitely a positive.
Ensuring a Strong, Healthy, and Just society
As mentioned, the gap between the West and developing nations is very immense. The article explains that cellular technology has helped meet the diverse needs, and yet also promote well-being, social cohesion and equal opportunity for all. It allow to expand clientele and income for entrepreneurs and local businessman.
